New Delhi, Days after calling home secretary G.K Pillai's comment prior to the India-Pakistan talks ill-timed, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna Thursday termed the comparison of Pillai with terrorist Hafiz Saeed by Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as 'ridiculous'.'It is ridiculous to compare the home secretary of India to a terrorist,' Krishna said during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha. On the eve of the foreign ministers' talks between the two countries, Pillai had said that Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) played a 'very significant role' in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.Qureshi, during the joint press conference at the end of the meet in Pakistan, said the remarks by Pillai were 'uncalled for'. He made an apparent comparison between Pillai's statement and the hate speeches by the Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed. At that point, Krishna remained silent, though later in Delhi he said there could be no comparison between the two statements.'Why is such a comparison being made by a responsible foreign minister of a friendly country like Pakistan. I did not want to get in a slanging match there,' Krishna said in response to a question by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and
Kathmandu, Seven years after remaining behind bars in Nepal for the alleged murder of an American tourist and having his 'not guilty' plea rejected by Nepali courts, Charles Sobhraj has finally a silver lining with the UN saying he did not get a fair trial and asking the government of Nepal to free him as well as pay compensation. The decision, poles apart from the judgment handed down last Friday by Nepal's Supreme Court, comes from the Human Rights Committee, the wing of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva that monitors whether the countries signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights are implementing it.In November 2008, five years after Sobhraj was arrested from a casino in Kathmandu, charged with the murder of Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975 and found guilty, his French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre filed a complaint with the UN, saying her client did not get a fair trial in Nepal.During its 99th session in Geneva from July 12-30, the UN committee has ruled that Sobhraj was not allowed access to judicial remedies, the courts were biased and his basic rights were violated.'In accordance with the covenant, the state is under an obligation to provide (Sobhraj) with an effective remedy, including the speedy conclusion of the proceedings and
At a time when the Jammu and Kashmir government is floundering as it tries to control the mass protests across the Valley, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah got some respite from a very unusual quarter: Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.Released a day after being re-arrested from the premises of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences where he was admitted while in custody, Geelani today addressed a press conference at his residence and asked protesters to "desist from arson and attacks on police stations" so that they didn't lose their "moral high ground" against the "oppressive" state.Geelani also revealed today that while he was in custody, the CM's trusted aide, Davinder Singh Rana, had met him and assured him of "political space" - signalling a major shift in the state government's policy on engaging with hardliners."Only we have suffered so far," he said. "We have suffered...50 civilians have been killed. Our acts are only harming us and not the state. We should think over it with a cool mind...We should take forward this movement in a peaceful manner. It (the protest) should be peaceful. I would like (my message) to be acted upon in letter and spirit. We should march peacefully. When we are
